Little Black Flats

I only have two shoe kinds that I slip on; on rotation. Summer: Havaianas; Winter: Vans.
Recently, I discovered that I lacked the "proper shoe". It is a simple shoe, one that fits almost any outfit and can easily aid you in formal functions or casual company. So just like the LBD (Little Black Dress) is key in any wardrobe, it has come to my attention that a Little Black Flat is just as important. And I'm using the term "little" very loosely; I'm a size 41.

So here are some I found whilst scouring net-a-porter.com. All very covetable:-

How very fetching, is this Bally one?

A flat Louboutin will do, since I still can't walk in heels.

These Jimmy Choo flats have a pretty buckle detail.

I personally like Tory Burch's logo. Don't know about the gold though.

and Marc by Marc Jacobs is back to being whimsical again. Yay!

LOL

This picture brought on the lol's. Hahahaha! It's the star struck girl in the background! See.
I love honest moments caught on camera. This is one star struck girl! "Katie Holmes! OMG!"
But seriously..Katie is lookin' weird. I'm not a fan or anything but many people in the media are concerned that she might be brainwashed. Not that it's anyone else's business, but something fishy is going on. Evidence: Check out anyone of her pictures pre-Tom Cruise. The lesson is ladies, don't change who you are for some guy! It's not worth it. Personally I don't think she digs her boyish cut at all..tsk tsk Katie. I can't remember the last time you smiled. But at least you still got fans.

Lego

I was never a real fan of the Danish invention, but I did enjoy building a few towers and knocking them down! But now that Lego have created these new fun pieces as a 30 year anniversary of Lego People, I can't help but feel childish and I want one I want one I want one!! Oh what devilish debauchery will Lego Winehouse be up too now? Muhahaha >:p I say by creating a toy of her they are going against the company name, which literally means, "play well." Naughty naughty. Do kids even know who she is?! Then I rest my case, these toys are for us; let the fun "icing sugar" snorting time begin!

Seuss-isms

Some of my favorite quotes by Dr. Seuss;-

“Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

“You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams.”

“Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened.”

“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.”

“Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

“I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!”

“How did it get so late so soon? Its night before its afternoon. December is here before its June. My goodness how the time has flewn. How did it get so late so soon?”

"I speak for the trees, for they have no tongues." the Lorax.

"Unless someone like you cares an awful lot, nothing is going to get better its not." the Lorax.

Rock n Roll

It's been a while since I heard this sort of song. The feel good one, with a catchy beat. New artist, Eric Hutchinson delivers; and I am already a fan.

Moon Bathing

I had a very inspired thought as I gazed up at the moon tonight. Why not moon bathe?
Heck if we slather on the sunscreen (carrot oil for some) and sit out in the heat to bake for the sake of a tan (or Vitamin D for some :p), why not soak up some moon rays? The moon probably feels lonely you know. What with all the attention the sun is getting; apart from the fact that we are awake during the time it shines, there are sunglasses, sunscreens, and solar everything!

But when the moon comes out, we ignore it and go to bed. I think it's sad. Revolving around us while we revolve around the sun. Shouldn't we pay enough attention to it too? I mean besides, "oh look, a full moon!" once every month and "did you see the eclipse?!" once every so often. Do we really want it to be blue? We know blue moons never happen.

So get in touch with your inner werewolf. Bathe yourself in the moon's rays tonight, or whenever the next full one comes around. The rays you will absorb have a truly therapeutic quality. And get some moonstones while your at it. I recently discovered that you can "recharge" their energies by letting them absorb moon rays. The best full moon I ever experienced was the Capricorn Moon in Cancer on July 18th. There were no words to describe it. But I soaked up every last energy it could give me that night. One of the truly least appreciated gifts, my darling, la lune. <3

Creamy Thai Chicken Soup

Alright, since we are fasting this month, my taste buds get nostalgic for things I've tasted before and might I mention are hard-to-get again. Things like a Greek Lamb Gyros with a minty tzatziki from a street vendor in Bali no less. A half smoked Salmon with banana plantains and a coconut shallot sauce from Laduree, and creamy Thai chicken soup. All of those things were savored on varied vacations, and all are extremely difficult to recreate. However I am adamant about re-creating the latter. It was such a random choice for me at this chic restaurant in Victoria BC, Canada, that I even forgot the restaurant's name! But I'd never forget the taste of that soup. The chicken was shredded just right, the sauce had the right ratio of sweet and spicy, but above all it was undeniably one of the most brilliant creamy soups I ever had. No rice required! *Update: The place is called Med Grill@Mosaic*

While we are on the subject of Thai, I still have Baan Kanya on speed dial. Who is that you say? More like where. Baan Kanya is this little Thai restaurant on 39 rue de Montpensier in the 1st arrondissement, Paris. They have a set menu (with 3 options each) for every night of the week. I happened to crave a yellow chicken curry on the Friday night I was to dine there. Lo and behold, it was the first option on the menu. It was, with no exaggeration, the most amazing curry dish I ever had (and believe me I've had some good curries). The meal was so good my friend and I did not speak to each other until it was over! The place is so small and well decorated; it feels like you are hanging out in some cool person's underground loft rather than dining @ a Thai joint in the back streets of Paris. The tea menu is another thing to rave about. Regrettably, I only managed to go there one last time before I left the "city of lights", and it was a Friday night too. ;p

I took dozens of business cards @ the exit door. I still have them lying around..

Diptyque

My love for candles is no secret. I recall one summer walking past a Yankee Candle store, ubiquitously found in the States, and stopping dead in my tracks to inhale. I'm sure you've been there too. Candles are a small luxury to the senses. As a kid I used to go no where near them, as an adolescent I would test my pain threshold by dipping my finger in its molten hot wax. But as an *cough cough* adult I burn them for pure olfactory pleasure.

It was only a matter of time before I traded my Yankees for Diptyques. It was such a major upgrade that I can not remember how I ever found joy in over-perfumed jarred candles. Every self respecting home understands the importance of a Diptyque candle; slowly releasing its essence into the room. Everything from the packaging, to the scent is sublime! However, I do not recall my first candle sniffing experience with the French establishment, but I know how comfortable I feel whenever I light one of their creations. They truly possess a transporting quality that I have seldom found in other candle makers.

My favorite above all is the Figuier. Rightly so, it is one of the three top selling candles that they've produced. Very homey, very green, and a one way ticket to some Grecian getaway. Never has the scent of fig enchanted the world such as this. Or at least, enchanted me.

The top selling one (and my mom's personal favorite) is Tubereuse. When I choose to bestow the gift of Diptyque to someone I always pick this crowd pleaser. Not many would agree to my personal choice so this one fits the bill of the basic Diptyque 101 course. It is derived from a Mexican bulbous herb and has a very sensuous heady scent. Surprisingly so, it is the most expensive floral perfume ingredient in the world. The quality is unsurpassed.

And finally, the Feu de Bois is one worth mentioning. I don't think anyone else has come close to capturing the exact scent of a fire place better than these guys. This is the real transporter. In the winters, I sit in my desert home, light this candle and in seconds, I find myself in the Alps. It's the best thing I can do in winters of a minimum of 7 degrees and a maximum of room temperature. The rare 1 or 0 is a haphazard circumstance.

My Figuier is down to its last two hours. Time to give the store a little visit :)

A word to the wise

Wisdom is something I seek constantly. I believe the Holy Quran is the most ethereal collection of verses known to man and has consistently brought divine light into our hearts and minds. But from a fellow mortal, whose words ring true and bring clarity to my own vision, I look no further than the sapient Khalil Gibran.

I first heard a poem of his on an episode of "The Boondocks". It's a surprising source because this show is known to be a foul mouthed program targeted primarily to an African American and adolescent audience. The main character was at a funeral and recited the words to the poem entitled "On Pain." I was riveted. I tried memorizing a few words or phrases to google. When I found what I was looking for I was even more enthralled. Consequently, I ordered his book "The Prophet" from Amazon.com. And when the book arrived, it felt like I held tangible wisdom. For three years now, it has been my second go-to guide for, well, guidance. His words put me at ease and makes me think of the bigger picture when my world shifts perspective or has lost it all together.

So, every once in a while I will try to remember that wisdom here..

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

Prestat

Every year my dear friend H returns from her summer vacation with new sweets and goodies for us to try. She went ga-ga over the cornucopia of candy and chocolate @ Super Target (infamously pronounced tar-jaay, with people now favoring the nick Targhetto). Butterfingers, Tootsie Rolls, Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, SpongeBob SquarePants Gummies, and some of those chewy fruity things wherein you can have a tongue tattoo...that doesn't really stick. These were all things I knew and loved. There was the odd savory item which was a hit as well, something called Chix I believe? They were pretzels stuffed with cheddar cheese; a very interesting tangy combination.

BUT, what stood out from this year's selection was what she got from London town.
Oh the songs I could sing about them, the poems I could pen about them, the dreams I dream about them...They were two humble boxes of Prestat chocolates!! The most heavenly and inspiring confectionery I know!

First I tried the Banoffee Truffles. It tasted like a Banana Cream Pie only without the crust, but the caramel inside more than made up for the lack of Graham Crackers! There was a hint of decaf coffee which, if you ask me, made all the difference. It balanced the sweetness of the white chocolate and the bitterness of the dark chocolate with marvelous flair. And they certainly did well in the banana arena, they used real banana flavorings. None of that artificial mumbo jumbo for the appointed chocolatiers to the Queen!

The second box had a tough job if it wanted to out do the heaven sent scrumptious-ness that is the Banoffee Truffles; but box no.2 did not disappoint.
Within its brown and fuschia container, lined in perfect order, one after the other, were thin round discs of cocoa splendor. It was a box of Organic Milk Chocolate Wafers flavored with Ground Cinnamon. Now, with all due respect to Galler's Milk Chocolate Curry squares, Prestat's round chocolate kicks a$$!!! As you can see my taste in chocolate is a little exotic, but trust me these are divine. Quite honestly I think they were specifically engineered to melt at precisely 37 degrees or whatever the correct temperature of the mouth is. I also found that they are even more scrumptious when lightly dipped in tea with milk. It speeds up the said melting process and heralds a tasting experience one wants to savor again and again. And the key thing is that they are thin, very thin wafers that trick you into consuming more than you need to at a given sitting.

So until I can get myself to visit their playfully candy-land, boudoir looking "mikyajy" a-like store on 14 Princes Arcade in Piccadilly, I'll have to settle for the Belgian alternative right here. I'm not saying they are a bad substitute, not at all. Why, just a bite of their "Pistaches Fraiches" white chocolate bar will have me finish the entire thing in no time at all. What I'm saying is that with something this good out there, it's a wonder I did not discover something this divine sooner. Thank you H for this eye opening experience, and three cheers for the Purveyors of Chocolates!! Hip hip..!!

**Oh and fun fact; Truffles were created in the French town of Chambery (ahem ahem), where the founder of Prestat, Antoine Dufour, brought his family recipe to England. I wish I knew that then, I could've tried all the truffles in that town! Well I did have enough time, three months of time. Oh well, London here we come!'Cuz I doubt the chocolates would survive the shipping process all the way to The Island. bummer**

Movie Reviews

1. Rent

Loved it! Looooooved it!! Mainly because I didnt expect anything outstanding, but it sure was!!
The songs are catchy, the story was moving, the actors were superb!! All in all a great experience.
And what a cryfest!! No im sorry, tearjerker is the correct term.

2. Juno

Again, loved it!! It rightly deserved to win the Oscar for best picture, but it won for best original screenplay. And original it was!! I listen to the soundtrack still. Lovely indie selections. From the title song to the last one, sublime!! Praise be to dark comedy.

3. No country for old men.

Seriously. The Oscar always goes to the weirdest movie of the year. It was...i couldn't find the word before, and I still can't. But the villan was very entertaining. Kudos to Javier Bardem, you deserve your Oscar! Very ingenious weapon too.

4. Jumper.

No. Big no. You got a good concept there Hollywood, but you messed up the delivery.
The audience has seen this before. Or at least is not satisfied with your version. The ending was complete b-s. Sorry, don't waste your time or money. Hayden, you didn't make me want you.

Sweeney Todd

Ah yes!

How could I forget that monster of a movie?

Absolutely outstanding. Impeccable work again Mr. Burton.
I must say as a child I did fancy The Nightmare Before X-mas.
Growing up Burton. Even the songs are much better than the original.
Encore!! (not to mention the songs are stuck in my head all day;
like singing "My Friends" to my knives as I'm about to de-bone a fish :p)

Week Re-cap

So many highlights this week!

First at the academy we sat for demonstrations of the Opera cake and Lobster. Not in the same dish obviously (and thankfully). We were to be making these dishes after the weekend. As for the weekend, I packed my things and left for Geneva. Matters to tend to there, glad I went. So on Tuesday, we had our only day off on a weekday. Guess what I did? Im scared to admit this. ok fine. I went to Disneyland. Hahaha!! No its true!! I went on the Rockin roller coaster, Phantom Manor, Thnder mountain and Pirates of the caribbean. Thats it. It was a craving it was. Then I went to the employment office. Yup, Im thinking of moving to the Magic Kingdom, permanently! Ahahaha! Ah well, time will tell. It is after all a kingdom I can govern in my own silly way.

Le Début

Bonjour et bienvenue!!

OK, thats about all the French that's going to be on here. Peut-etre. (Maybe :p)
So to whoever is reading this; Welcome.
If it is just me, then great. The sole purpose is to provide a refuge for yours truly,
should she wander far and wide in this vast network of...I don't know, the internet.

Reason for the blog: check.

Since I am in Paris, I have opted to to go by my nickname in French.

Observe. Empress is English...Impératrice is French. Voila!
So I thought where would an Empress hang out? Why, in her palace ofcourse!

Reason for name and title: check.

That concludes my daily report since this is the only thing I have to report on thus far.
