Wisdom is something I seek constantly. I believe the Holy Quran is the most ethereal collection of verses known to man and has consistently brought divine light into our hearts and minds. But from a fellow mortal, whose words ring true and bring clarity to my own vision, I look no further than the sapient Khalil Gibran.
I first heard a poem of his on an episode of "The Boondocks". It's a surprising source because this show is known to be a foul mouthed program targeted primarily to an African American and adolescent audience. The main character was at a funeral and recited the words to the poem entitled "On Pain." I was riveted. I tried memorizing a few words or phrases to google. When I found what I was looking for I was even more enthralled. Consequently, I ordered his book "The Prophet" from Amazon.com. And when the book arrived, it felt like I held tangible wisdom. For three years now, it has been my second go-to guide for, well, guidance. His words put me at ease and makes me think of the bigger picture when my world shifts perspective or has lost it all together.
So, every once in a while I will try to remember that wisdom here..
When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
